Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies (TCLC) organised a working paper series ta lk online that  entitled “ Jawi Writing Implementation in Vernacular Schools: How Malaysian Chinese Newspapers Frame the Controversy  &   Belt and Road initiatives: Rise in Bilateral Trade and Investment Transforming Malaysia conducted  by Mr. Kenneth Lee Tze Wui and Dr. Au Yong Hui Nee , on 1May 2020.

Present at the  both  talks  were around 40 attendees. The  first  talk focused on explain the issues of the Malaysian government’s move to introduce Jawi-Khat in the Bahasa Malaysia curriculum in Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools has been met with much tension and controversy, and how Malaysia s Chinese respond. Mr Kenneth Lee choose three Chinese News Papers as his studies materials and analyzed the news sources, news frames and valence of the reports. As his findings on his summary, he noticed that in the Chinese newspapers were merely performing their role as a platform for discourse on an issue so vital to the Chinese community in the country. The Chinese newspapers were also law-abiding, created room for disagreement and attempted to de-escalate the Chinese community’s dissatisfaction over the Jawi-Khat issue.      

The  second  talk focused on explain the economic relationship among Malaysia and China, how s it is nowadays and whats the factors behind? Dr Au Yong attempts to study the accomplishments in her research, particularly in deepening the Malaysia and China ties in investment and trade. These policy initiatives are studied and deliberated related to multinational corporations’ plans and governments’ developmental aims in Malaysia. Policy recommendations are made for Malaysia and also other developing economies desire to improve the possible development impacts of MNCs activities. 

Kenneth Lee Tze Wui was born in Sarawak on the island of Borneo. After receiving his secondary education in Kuching, he proceeded to pursue his tertiary studies in Peninsular Malaysia.Kenneth had some brief experience working with former Sarawak-based English tabloid Malaysian Today and Malaysia’s leading English daily The Star. Otherwise, Kenneth has been devotedly contributing to the education sector. He was serving the Faculty of Arts and Social Science of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) for approximately two years, before moving on to lecture at the Legenda Education Group (LEG) for about five years. At LEG, Kenneth was appointed as the Programme Coordinator then the Head of Department between 2012 and 2015.In 2015, Kenneth decided to take a break from work to travel Asia, only to eventually land himself a teaching job in Chumphon, Thailand.  After two wonderful years in Thailand, in 2017 Kenneth went back to serve in the higher education industry, where he was the Head of Programme for Diploma in Mass Communication at INTI International College Penang. He is currently attached to the Faculty of Creative Industries of UTAR (Sungai Long campus) as a lecturer and pursuing his PhD. 

Dr. Au Yong Hui Nee holds a PhD degree in Technology Management from University of Science Malaysia, a graduate of MA Economics from University of Tsukuba in Japan and Bachelor of Science (Hons.) Resource Economics from UPM (Universiti Pertanian Malaysia). She is the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Finance, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). She was a certified safety and health officer and Member of the Malaysian Institute of Management. She has published over thirty articles in indexed journals - Web of Science (ISI) and Scopus Journal and Conference Proceedings Lists. She serves as a reviewer for eleven WoS (ISI)-indexed international journals and an editor board member of two international peer-review journals. Her work was covered by the national media, magazines, TV and digital media. Dr. Au Yong was trained in an investment bank. Prior to joining academia, she held management positions in technology and the public sector. Furthermore, Dr. Au Yong's extensive industry and research expertise have led to much success. She has been involved in several research and consulting projects. She has received research grants to the amount of MYR500,000 between 2015 and 2019. She is a recipient Malaysian Institute of Management Tun Razak Youth Leadership Award, Japanese Government Monbukagakusho Scholarship, and a winner of Best Paper Awards and Best Oral Presentation Award.
