2020-ncov-Sinophobia Panic Outbreak: Some Observations in Malasia through the Lenses of Social Structural-Strain Theory
Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies (TCLC) organized a talk entitled "2020-ncov-Sinophobia Panic Outbreak: Some Observations in Malaysia through the Lenses of Social Structural-Strain Theory" Conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chin Yee Mun, the Chairperson of Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies(TCLC), UTAR and assist by Mr. Kenneth Lee Tze Wui and Ms. Eng May Chuen on 19 February 2020.

The talk focused on explain the factor behind 2019-ncov-Sinophobia panic
in Malaysia by applying Smelser’s Structural Strain Theory since Novel
Corona Virus (2019-ncov) outbreak started in December 2019 – Wuhan China
and spread into Malaysia (first case 23 Jan 2019 – Visitors from China,
First Malaysian case – 4 February 2019.) In the speech of Dr Chin he
mentioned that due to the virus is novel and no vaccine is available,
and aggravated by the fact that it originates from China (trust
deficit), it direct brought the fear for the whole world. Dr Chin
clearly state that how the fear outbreak that hide in the shadow of
virus.
Dr. Chin Yee Mun obtained his Ph.D in the field of
social psychology from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Currently, he is an
associate professor at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). His main
research interest is in the area of ethnic relations and ethnic
politics.
